ChatGPT Gains Support for External MCP Servers
External MCP server support turns ChatGPT into a platform for custom AI agents and seamless integration with business tools.
OpenAI has expanded ChatGPT’s capabilities: the assistant can now connect to external MCP servers. This upgrade enables deeper integration with third-party applications and services — from enterprise platforms to specialized tools.
We’ve (finally) added full support for MCP tools in ChatGPT.
In developer mode, developers can create connectors and use them in chat for write actions (not just search/fetch). Update Jira tickets, trigger Zapier workflows, or combine connectors for complex automations.

With this new mechanism, developers can let ChatGPT perform actions inside external programs and display the results directly in the chat. The chatbot is no longer just a text generator — it becomes a practical workspace tool that interacts with users’ digital ecosystems.
The update is already available to Pro and Plus subscribers. To activate MCP connections, simply enable Developer Mode in the Connectors section of the settings.
Experts highlight that this change transforms ChatGPT into a platform for building personalized AI agents capable of automatically working with documents, data, and company services.
